Don't like Windows 8? Hang on - Windows 8.1 is on its way.

Windows 8 running on a laptop PC

Some people love the look and feel of Microsoft's Windows 8, and others hate it. The general idea behind the new Metro interface was to make Windows usage seamless between desktop and mobile devices - but the changes have alienated large numbers of PC users.

One of the problems that users have complained about is the missing Start button. Ever since Windows XP, Windows has had a Start button from which users could launch all sorts of things including the Control Panel, programs like Microsoft Excel, or Windows Explorer to find files. But now, the Start button has gone - and it's functionality has been spread around other parts of the operating system.

Another problem is that many users don't like the Metro interface, and would rather just have the familiar desktop.

Well it seems Microsoft has been listening, and although Windows 8 really hasn't been with us for very long, rumours are that Windows 8.1 is just around the corner - with a preview release slated for June 26th - and if those rumours are to be believed, we're likely to see the return of the Start button, and an option to boot straight to the desktop, bypassing Metro. What's more, it seems that Windows 8.1 will be offered as a free upgrade to all Windows 8 users.
